Dubai Health Authority and Dubai Holding Launch ‘Be the Hero. Save Lives’ Blood Donation Campaign

On “World Blood Donor Day”, which falls on June 14 every year, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Dubai Holding announced a yearlong blood donation campaign known as ‘Be the Hero. Save Lives’.

As part of the campaign, Dubai Holding has provided a state-of-the-art blood donation bus, which will be operated by the DHA’s Dubai Blood Donation Centre (DBDC).

The campaign will reach out community members in Dubai including Dubai Holding’s business districts, commercial communities, residential communities, and key retail destinations.

The agreement was recently signed in the DHA headquarters by Ahmed Al Nuaimi, CEO of Joint Corporate Support Services and Khalid Al Malik, Managing Director of Dubai Holding, in presence of His Excellency Humaid Al Qutami, Director-General of the DHA

In the UAE, 100 per cent of the blood is donated by donors without any monetary compensation. Last year, the DBDC organised 734 blood donation campaigns and received around 65,000 blood donors.

His Excellency Humaid Al Qutami, Director-General of the DHA said, “DBDC receives blood donations from more than 150 nationalities who all come together to help those in need of blood. DBDC provides around 50 per cent of the total blood collected throughout the country, ensuring that those in need in both public and private hospitals have access to safe and timely supply of blood. This could not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of our donors, many of whom are regular blood and platelet donors.  The UAE leadership has instilled the value of giving. Such campaigns promote social commitment. We are very thankful to Dubai Holding for helping us in this noble initiative that will provide enhanced convenience to blood donors and encourage the community to donate blood.”

Khalid Al Malik, Managing Director of Dubai Holding, said: “We are keen on supporting the community and making a positive difference to people’s health and wellbeing in order to help ensure a prosperous future for our nation. Our initiative to launch a state-of-the-art blood donation bus, which will be operated by Dubai Blood Donation Centre, is aimed at enhancing blood donations and providing donors with added convenience. The joint campaign will run for a full year to encourage maximum participation”

Al Malik added: “This is designed to be a city-wide effort that will engage the public, including Dubai Holding’s own residential, commercial and retail communities and destinations where currently more than 300,000 people live and work, with the number growing as we continue to expand our portfolio. There is a lot of enthusiasm already among our 24,000 employees across Dubai Holding’s six companies. They will participate in the campaign to help save the life of someone in need. This is also our first collaboration with Dubai Health Authority and we will soon be announcing additional joint initiatives to support the community.”

Dr Mai Raouf, Director of DHA’s Dubai Blood Donation Centre said, “People can donate blood every eight weeks, and platelets up to 24 times a year. With each blood donation, you can potentially save up to three lives. Regular blood donation takes 15 minutes, while platelet collection takes 45 minutes to one hour. Platelet collections are vital and needed by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Since platelets are blood cells critical to stop bleeding, these are also used in life-threatening bleeding situations, post-surgery or after accidents. Our message to the community is that they should come forward and donate blood. Donating blood is a safe process, necessary to save lives, it is a constant need and a humanitarian deed.”

She added that through the mobile blood donation bus, the Centre will reach out to community members at their work places, universities, in community areas etc. to provide easy and convenient blood donation facilities.

The DBDC is accredited by AABB and follows the highest level of quality standards for blood collection, processing and storage to ensure safety of the donor and the patient.

It is located in the premises of Latifa Hospital and individuals interested to donate blood may contact the centre on 800 342 (800 DHA).
